scrawledoutdreams asked: if you're really in for a treat, i walk to the beat of niggas in paris off of watch the throne. like, it's quick enough for a jog or a really fast walk. walking pushes me to get through the whole song. i'll look through my playlist today and give you some other stuff. and, also (you're gonna love this), i ALWAYS cool down to the weekend. i do something like a striptease once i get home. it gets my clothes off, gives a REALLY good stretch, and makes me feel confident at the same time. (:

Some great tips from the lovely Rachel :)

BALLS!

Exercise balls, to be precise.

I have that bad boy in a lovely shade of mint green, and it’s one of the best investments to my health I’ve made; not to mention a lot of fun. Make sure to purchase a ball that is the correct size for the type of work you want to do with it, and has the ability to carry your weight.

Oh, and pretty colors don’t hurt either.

A variety of exercises can be completed using an exercise ball: from pushups and crunches to curls and lunges. I find it’s one of the best pieces of fitness equipment, versatile and easy to use. A simple google search will reveal plenty of video and chart workout guides.

An exercise ball is also a great tool to improve your balance and posture. I try to switch out my desk chair for a seat on my ball for at least an hour. Also, it’s fun to bounce every now and then, release your inner child.

On running

A couple of people have asked me how I got started running, especially since I’m not a small girl (see icon photo, haha) so I decided to make a post on it. Running was something I hated to do when I was younger: probably due to a bad mix of mean gym teachers, asthma, and cold weather.

Earlier this year at the gym, I saw people running laps, or talking about how good it felt after, so I got curious. I was looking for a way to challenge my body besides the usual gym equipment. So I did some research, bought some good sneakers, and started doing C25K, or Couch to 5K.

Info on the program and my experience after the cut!

This is one of my favorite ways to start the day, especially when I’m feeling stiff. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t do all the poses, you will be able to, and sooner than you think!

Enjoy

dresdenlowe asked: Yoga can be a great low impact exercise. It can be really intense, but you only do as much as you can/want and it's great for the muscles and usually not hard on the joints. I like to do a bit when I'm feeling lazy as it feels like you're not exerting yourself much and doesn't require multiple sports bras, but I always feel amazing and so relaxed afterwards!

You are so right! I actually do yoga once a week, so I have no idea how I forgot to add it.

It’s a great way to boost your physical and mental/emotional health at the same time; you said it, it’s so relaxing!

The great thing about it is that you do go at your own pace, and many instructors (on dvds, or in classes) also demonstrate modified moves for the not yet limber.

Great suggestion, thank you! Keep ‘em coming, folks!

Low-Impact Exercise

Yesterday, I was sent a question by a lovely lady who asked if I knew what exercises were good for her to start back working out. She is a plus size lady who in the past had an ankle injury, and thus wanted something low impact to start with.

I think walking is so effective, but most people dismiss it as not “intense” enough. Whether it be on a treadmill, or outdoors (which I personally love) find a pace that is comfortable for you and warm up at that pace. After a good five, ten minutes pick up the pace a bit and challenge yourself. Walk places you need to be! Making exercise practical is the perfect way to fit it into your day.

Dancing is also so underrated as a means of getting fit. Making a playlist that’s, let’s say, 20 minutes long and committing to jamming out to it burns calories and builds endurance! Plus you’re having fun. For me, dancing is not only a way to move, but a way to get in touch with my body, and learn to love it more.

When I first started working out, I loved racquetball. It was fun, and intense, but I set my own pace, so it wasn’t overwhelming. Swimming and biking are also great cardio workouts.

If you have a membership to a gym, I would try the elliptical at a low resistance; it is very low impact which is good for that ankle of yours. And some simple weight lifting; bicep curls, tricep extensions, etc. with a small weight, perhaps 5lbs, in each hand.

What are your favorite exercises? Let me know, add to the list!

While searching the internet for work outs tailoring to the needs of the overweight and obese, I came across Couch Potato Exercises which became my inspiration for physical activities involving your couch! I think it’s SO important that everyone realize exercising doesn’t necessarily mean going to the gym for hours, it can be something as simple  as doing house chores or using the things in your house and in return will increase your stamina and abilities that you already have or are suffering. I know how it feels to be intimidated by the gym and by other people so start small but start if you feel like you could benefit.

A useful and charming video from our friend Marf :)

How Much Weight You Can Lose By Prom/Summer/Your Wedding/This Thursday/Tonight

This masterpost is an excellent reference tool to kickstart your healthy living!

Personally, I don’t use the calculator section. The number on the scale is not my focus, and I don’t have a goal weight. I do weigh myself every so often to monitor how my body is responding to all the healthy choices I am making, however.

The Daily Workout

Today I went running for half an hour, jogging when I needed to. It’s amazing how much stamina you can build in just a few weeks of running. I couldn’t run for more than five minutes when I started!

Now it’s becoming this wonderful feeling for me. It sucks during, even when you pace yourself and control your breathing, but the feeling after is the best. I feel vibrant and refreshed, and my skin looks great!

I also went to a 45 minute yoga class, it took down some stress and gave me a great stretch.

All in all it was a great way to spend my morning.
